For anyone who uses WordPress as their blogging platform, there arises a need for an effective and working Gallery plugin at some point of time. If you are a photo blogger, the need for Gallery plugins is even higher. Although, after the release of WordPress versions 2.5+, a gallery feature has been integrated into WordPress, where once you upload some images on a post or a page, WordPress allows you to insert that group as an image gallery into your post or page.

In spite of this fact, sometimes using a plugin is much more efficient because not all WordPress themes contain CSS styling for the gallery feature and also, some plugins make your galleries visually better and much more accessible. So, in order to save the trouble of browsing through different gallery plugins on the Internet, I have compiled a list of the 10 best WordPress Gallery plugins. I have also inserted a poll under this post, where you can rate the listed plugins and help other users to make a better choice.

NextGen Gallery Plugin

The famous NextGen Gallery is a full integrated Image Gallery plugin for WordPress with a Flash slideshow option. Features include custom templates, AJAX thumbnail generator, sortable Albums, Zip file uploads, Watermark function, Lightbox Effects, Sidebar Widget, Flash Goodies and much more.

I’m trying to find a gallery plug-in that allows for multiple galleries. Each gallery would have its own author. And I want to make it such that the user doesn’t have to have the “Author” role for WordPress, because I don’t want the user to have access to other site controls

Hi, I’m running a blog which topic is art and artists. So I desperately need a good gallery plugin to display images and probably videos. I don’t need a lot of options, I just need to create a sub page or article for each artist, I also need to put all the galleries on one page, and probably some thumbnails on each artist article… Which one of these plugin would you recommend?

It’s a pity you don’t have a donate button! I’d certainly donate to this fantastic blog! I suppose for now i’ll settle for bookmarking and adding your RSS feed to my Google account. I look forward to brand new updates and will share this website with my Facebook group. Talk soon!

Nice plugins, NextGen is the best….but i am looking for a plugin, that user can vote for single image, something like end of this post page!!!

anyone please reply?

I cannot recommend Lazyest Gallery Plugin due to the ambiguity in its function. When I deactivated it, it had left some codes here and there that was not interesting at all. Not clean codes!

Hello, i have a trouble finding galleries pluggin for Wp. Is there a plugin which is i can upload thumbnail and original image each one by one? I’m so desperately can’t find a plugin like that 🙁

Great list. Think I will give nextgen a go. I’m trying to add a box with multiple images and links on my righthand side bar. Hopefully this will allow me to do so?

Just fyi,

There are two that have not been mentioned: “gallery and caption” and “jquery native”. These both update the existing wp gallery rather than supplant it. Transitions are sexy. gallery and caption adds the ability to theme wp caption images and do things similar to inline gallery (multiple galleries per post).

Some good ones here that I’ve never seen before. I’m trying to find one that pulls in images from posts automatically, and the image links to the post when clicked. Shouldn’t be hard to find but it is… Thanks for this list!

WP Photo Album has not worked with the last three releases of WordPress and it looks like the developer has stopped supporting the plugin.

I’m sorry, but these are all pretty terrible. NOT that I can create anything better, but the gallery support for WP is pretty bad. It’s frustrating, really.

I wish someone would create a plugin that would let you…

– select images
– set backgrounds
– auto generate thumbnails
– apply javascript transitions

Am I missing one? Anyone?

Just to present the WordPress Chatbot plugin, with “robot style” voice. I’m got plenty of plugins and I’m looking for advise to monetize the stuff…

I have been using “featured content gallery” on my travel website. I like the end effect and that there is no requirement to resize etc.
I will check out the NextGen plugin now.

Being mainly a Joomla user, the gallery componenet I use most is Joomgallery. It’s very flexible and has a lot of features, but can be very hard to understand the admin of it. As for chagning the look of it, you need coding knowledge really.
I’m considering moving to wordpress, as I hear that it’s more user friendly for the ‘non- technical’ amongst us.
Can anyone recommend this, or am I barking up the wrong tree ?

I was wondering if anyone can tell me where can I get a plug-in for the voting functionality that is used on this site. Thank you very much

There is yet to be a really effective image gallery where you store the images on your own server.

Nextgen Gallery is still too much of a hassle when inserting large amount of images in different galleries, it’s a pity that it’s the only viable choice currently.

Just wondering if any of the plugins featured support multiple categories? I remember testing out NextGEN and did like it, but alas there was no support for multiple categories at the time. Not sure if there is now?

I use Kpicasa gallery which is very good for pulling images stored in Picasaweb. You can use either Lightbox or Highslide javascript tool for rendering expanded images.

“Shashin” is also very good for Picasaweb images and it has many options.

Just to get this overview is a great help!
I’ve been trying out NextGen gallery for some time, but have some minor problems. No doubt it’s an incredible plugin, but now I can try out some others.
We’ll see where this ends :o)

Which one of them is able to read in existing uploaded images?

This is the biggest problem I have with WP – existing uploaded images cannot be found by other image plugins.

I see the gallery images on your site. When I click on them you get that nice window with the next and prev links on either side. I have NextGen installed but I don’t seem to get that, when you click on the image it closes. How did you get that???
